Rehearsal Blog Update 10/03/2014

Dear Ensemble and Vocalise Singers and Families,

What a fantastic, fabulous, fun fall retreat! Thank you, singers, for your time, dedication, energy and enthusiasm. Thank you also to all families for helping your singers attend, and especially to those of you who came to our camp concert!

Our next event is next week! Read below for details:

British Composer Will Todd in Residency with Cantabile

As part of our exciting 20th Anniversary Season, Cantabile is proud to present a series of masterclasses with British composer and jazz pianist Will Todd, one of the brightest stars among the composers of his generation, in England and beyond. Mr. Todd’s four-day residency with our performing choirs — Aria, Vocalise and Ensemble — will include rehearsals and masterclasses, and an invitation only event on Saturday to support our New Music Commissioning Fund. Parents of Vocalise and Ensemble singers are invited to attend Will’s Friday night masterclass/lecture (6-8 pm) where he will share his stories of becoming a jazz musician and a composer of choral music, and talk about his compositional technique and style as well as the British music scene.

What to Practice This Week
ENSEMBLE

Repertoire

Gloria and Call of Wisdom: Review your parts carefully to get ready for Will Todd next week!

Inflammatus et accentus. Read the translation of the text on the back of your scores, then click HERE to listen to the piece performed by two soloists:

Magic Prayer: Focus particularly on measures 75-end. We will work on this next week.

Cool Yule: Review page 6 and come up with some ideas for simple choreography – we will share these next week.

Vois Sur Ton Chemin: Begin memorizing – everything up to just before “Bonheurs enfantin”. In case it is helpful, here is the section of text that I am talking about, to view separately from the music:
Vois sur ton chemin
Gamins oubliés egarés
Donnez-leur la main pour les mener
Vers d'autres lendemains
Sens au coeur de la nuit
L'onde de l'espoir
Ardeur de la vie
Sentier de gloire

Musicianship

Pages 16-18 are due next week for all singers completing “A Young Singer’s Journey” Book III or IV. Please also view the marker’s comments at the front of the book and make sure that you have corrected any mistakes made in last week’s work.

Your secret word is “fire”.

VOCALISE

Gloria: Notes, rhythms, and text all perfectly known in preparation for Will Todd next week!

Call of Wisdom: this was memorized last year – see if you can review it enough to sing it by memory again this Monday. We will also sing this for Will Todd!

Let it Shine: Review from camp. Make sure you’re comfortable with the key change from F to F#.

Wie lieblich sing deine Wohnungen: Learn well measures 1-53, which we covered during rehearsal. Then, take a look at the rest of the piece and figure out your part. Click HERE to check out a recording.

Hanget Soi: Make sure your notes are solid. Click HERE to check out a recording.

Star Spangled Banner: Memorized.

It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Memorized.

Amazing Grace: Memorized.

Carols and Lullabies: Learn the notes and rhythms to the movements we started. Click HERE and HERE to check out some recordings.

Your secret word is “folksong".

Happy Practicing!
